William Laffan (ed.)
With contributions from Deirdre Conroy, Jane Fenlon, Peter Harbison, Emmeline Henderson, Judith Hill, Anne Hodge, Claudia Kinmonth, Simon Lincoln, Eve McAulay, Kevin Mulligan, Finola O’Kane, Brendan Rooney, Terence Reeves-Smyth, Yvonne Scott and Charlotte Yeldham
Over the last three decades the eminent art historian Desmond FitzGerald, Knight of Glin has assembled a collection of views of Ireland, ranging in date from the mid-eighteenth century to today. In Painting Ireland a selection of these are catalogued and discussed in close readings. The interdisciplinary approach to the material crosses boundaries of art, architectural, social and local history. While there is a particular focus on depictions of the great houses of Ireland, there are also images of castles, townscapes, gardens and garden buildings, archaeological remains and interiors.
The publication is the most in-depth catalogue yet attempted of an Irish private collection, and continues Churchill House Press’ involvement in publishing little known aspects of Ireland’s art and architectural heritage.

Eileen Battersby, Irish Times
"This wonderful book – which should incidentally be purchased by every school in the state – is a serious informed commentary that looks to the great houses and to the far wider world…This is the way to teach Irish social history. It is a book about the past not about privilege…Never has the cautionary polemic of conservation and preservation been as elegantly presented with such balanced conviction, scholarship and stories of lives lived."
John and Eileen Harris, The Art Newspaper
"This quarto can induce salivation in bed."
Toby Barnard, Times Literary Supplement
"The editor, William Laffan, and his numerous subalterns deploy a formidable weaponry of scholarship on nearly 200 images. The contributors correct the prevailing notion that, until the late nineteenth century, Ireland was starved of painters."
David Glayney Brown, World of Interiors
"From this book of places…lives leap from the page."
Rory Brennan, Books Ireland
"This volume…makes for an original, often absorbing, sometimes curious, certainly nostalgic experience. The collector – and his editor and admirable team of scholars – have…produced a collector’s item."
